Top 10 things to do in Bend,OR in a low snow winter.

This morning before work I took a little hike up Pilot Butte. It’s a nice 1 hr. round trip from my house. On the way up I passed a guy taking a sunrise photo. As I passed, He said “it never gets old”. He’s right. Pilot Butte, Bend, the mountains, the sunsets, they don’t get old for me either.

I’ve got memories of post homecoming dance parties on the top of Pilot Butte, runs for time around the base from Bend High during tennis practice, and a sunset memorial walk for one of my dearest friends from junior high. Pilot Butte has often made my top 10 list of things to do in Bend, (which has waned in the past 6 years…) this morning I was inspired to bring it back. My winter is usually pretty simple. Skate ski at Meisner, or skin Tumalo, but alas no snow means getting creative.

My first recommendation is hike up Pilot Butte. You can start at various locations. The first time I would start at the State Park parking lot. The second time around, start at the east side Back Porch coffee. Just for a different, slightly longer approach and a great cup of coffee from a local roaster. Also the banana bread is A+

Have you found Dutch and Bow? It’s a colorful, fresh, woman’s boutique carrying really inspiring clothing. The brands are European, with color, texture, and details to die for. Thank goodness there is always a sale rack out front. These clothes go great with vintage boots.

The Blissful Spoon is a special little breakfast find. Delicious food, a sweet atmosphere, and gluten free sweets. Great for a lunch meet up. Check the hours before you go!

My next two recommendations are also suspiciously close to my work. I am in retail and that has been what I have been doing… working. But when I need a gift or a little pick me up, I love Wild Petals Provisions. Meats, cheese, wine, candles, gifts, cutting boards, spices, and MORE. So fun. Nancy the owner is awesome and will set you up!

When I need a little food, a pint, and an escape to a hidden European pub, I go to The Cellar. This is the kind of place I like to keep a little bit secret…. try the pies!

Ice skating at the Inn of the Seventh Mountain is also a blast. It feels like a winter wonderland with or without snow, and a warm drink purchased at the edge of the small, family friendly rink adds to the festive vibe.

The secret to surviving winter in Central Oregon is to get out in it. The trails close to town are less crowded now and not covered in a treacherous coating of ice as they often are in winter. Running and walking is a great option for getting outside. Explore the newly completed Pioneer Reach river trail near Cowgirl Cash and Arrange. Head south to the Old Mill, or North and follow the path to the Northside of Awbrey Butte. Look for herons, eagles, geese, and deer. Bend never gets old… but sometimes you have to force yourself to get OUT! Have fun and drop by the store for a hello. Or call Kris or I and we’ll go see some Cowgirl Properties!
